If you love cats, this is the pattern book for you. Over 25 realistically proportioned cats in various playful poses and situations -- lounging, snoozing, stalking, playing with yarn, and doing various other nice things (and none of the gross things) that cats do. These patterns aren't computer generated like those you find in a lot of pattern books. They are the real deal, as evidenced by the photos of most of the finished designs. As with other books from West of the Moon Publications, the book production quality is not so high, but the patterns are great, and that's what matters. $10.93, 3 for $29.52, 6 for $52.44 | For the orchid afficionado, this well crafted book contains 17 designs for orchid projects, including windows, lampshades and jewelry boxes. Each design is anatomically correct, and is denoted by its scientific name in binomial nomenclature. The popular "Showy Lady's Slipper", or Cypripedium reginae, is represented twice, in a panel as well as a lampshade. The recommended glass selections of ripples and mottles create some breathtaking results. As with most books from Wardell Publications, some instructions, tips and tricks are included that will be useful for even the experienced craftperson. $18.39, 3 for $49.65, 6 for $88.26 |
New! The idea behind this book is that the images represented have symbolic meaning -- oak leaves represent endurance and long life, a heart represents love and friendship, wheat represents abundance, and so on. Installing these in your home sends a welcome message for visitors. (All you hermits out there might want to steer clear of this book.) Most of these patterns are intended as sidelights, transoms and door inserts, so they'll need to be enlarged significantly to fit your particular space. The oak leaves and stars patterns are especially comforting and inviting; the spider web (with spider!), not so much. Softcover. From CKE Publications. $16.28, 3 for $43.95, 6 for $78.12 | New! There are 40 patterns in this appropriately named book, including two full size window patterns. All of the lovely women in this book are well proportioned, in the sense that they aren't cartoon-ish, and are all pleasant to the eye. We have maidens and princesses of Arthurian legend, a Native American legend, enchanted forests, and mermaids galore. Perfect for pagans, and we mean that in the nicest way. From Wardell Publications. $18.22, 3 for $49.20, 6 for $87.48 |
As with all the designs from Ms. Eaton, these drawings are quite stunning, and could be used as designs for creations other than those in stained glass. Heck, this book is enjoyable merely as a coloring book. To create these in stained glass you will probably want to enlarge these drawings, or just use portions of them, given the level of detail. $12.89 | A wealth of beautiful patterns - 91 in all - adapted from the Book of Kells and other sources. Some might be impossible to achieve in stained glass (expect perhaps with a glass saw and some very good luck), but nonetheless a great book for the price. $8.91 |
Some familiar flowers -- morning glories, day lilies and the like -- neatly framed in circles, ovals, diamonds, or baskets. The hibiscus is especially stunning. There's also a "sun and stars" pattern in this book, but we're not sure why. Eight full-sized designs, all of them about 16" x 20", or 16" round. $12.38 | Eight full-sized window patterns, the largest being 20" x 30", evoking peaceful, fanciful settings in nature, such as romantically inclined swans on a pond, a blue jay on a country fence admiring some sunflowers, and a lorikeet (that's a bird, we're told) in some jungle foliage. One of the more interesting designs here, for the lepidopterists among you, is a butterfly garden containing butterflies in each of the stages of metamorphosis: egg, caterpillar, chrysalis and butterfly. Each design is shown in color photos, and the patterns are accompanied by information about how much glass you'll need, as well as suggestions for how to construct the windows. $12.38 |
As the title suggests, this book is a mixed bag of designs, from the relatively simple and cartoonish "Ba-loony Bunny", to the stunning "Majestic Iris." The images of birds, flowers and landscapes are particularly beautiful, and are alone worth the price of the book. $12.38 | A classy collection of sidelights, transoms and door inserts featuring flowers, grapevines, scrolls, wreaths, and other motifs derived from authentic 19th-century sources. 175 black-and-white illustrations. $8.91 |

Mr. Hywel G. Harris owns and operates a stained glass studio in Nottingham, England.
