Cementing and Glazing Stuff for Leaded Glass

Glazing Compound
Glazing Compound

Black glazing compound saves you the messy job of mixing regular white putty with lampblack for glazing your finished leaded glass project into a sash or frame.

We also offer white glazing compound, by special order.

Unlike the cement you use to weatherproof and strengthen your leaded glass panel, this glazing compound dries on the outside, yet stays soft underneath to cushion glass against shock and vibration.

Once you've assembled your leaded glass panel, you will need to set it with cement, to give it strength and to make it resistant to the elements. Some hardy folks mix their own cement, using linseed oil, turpentine, lamp black, whiting, and other such messy materials. You can reduce the mess by using this premixed Studio Pro cement from Diamond Tech. This fast-setting stained glass cement comes in a plastic container with a twist off cap for easy, mess-free opening. It is a rich black color, and comes in a roomy container for easy mixing. 1 lb.

A fine black powder, about the consistency of talcum, which we mix with other ingredients to make the leaded glass waterproofing cement in our studio. Its original source was the lampshades of the lamps used in the 19th century where it accumulated as the lamp burned. The amount of this carbon deposited on the lampshade was an indicator of the purity of the oil being burned. It was necessary to scrape the lampblack off from time to time, and various uses were found for it. It is now also used to color Portland Cement, when a dark grout is desired.
