The second in a series of three pattern books for making stunning three-sided stained glass table lanterns. The book is subtitled "Lazy Afternoon Lamps". Presumably you are free to illuminate them when you wish, but afternoons, especially lazy ones, are ideal for some unspecified reason. A broad range of patterns are included, from the silly to the sublime (mostly sublime). Included are some Oriental motifs (Japanese lanterns, sushi), a couple of handsome patriotic designs, some flowers, a beautiful cat, a couple of nautical designs (seahorse, orca), and we won't mention the silly ones, as there are only one or two. One page of detailed instructions are included for assembling the lanterns.

The first in a series of three pattern books for making stunning three-sided stained glass table lanterns. A broad range of patterns are included, from Victorian to contemporary. Some abstracts, some flowers, a couple of bamboos, a bird, a few flowers, a mountain landscape, a frog, and an owl are all represented, as well as one four-sided grape pattern. Detailed instructions are included for assembling the three-paneled lanterns, although they sort of gloss over the "prepare a triangular wooden base, 8 inches on a side", as if it were as simple as preparing a cookie sheet.

The third in a series of three pattern books for making stunning three-sided stained glass table lanterns. We don't want to imply that the good and talented people at Aanraku are running out of ideas for their three-sided lanterns, but... among the beautiful -- nay, breathtaking -- designs, we see a group of four of platypuses. Multiply that by three sides and you get 12 of the little fellows, which would be fine for the platypus aficionado, except platypuses are solitary creatures and do not congregate. In fact, there is no collective noun for platypuses for this very reason, just as there is no collective noun for hermits. Nor for dictators. If you can suggest a collective noun for any of the above, please drop us a line.

But we digress.

Just as with Books I and II, this stained glass lantern design book has something for everybody -- sailboats, sun and moon, a chameleon, a fairy, a lighthouse, angel fish, some landscapes, flowers, birds, and the ubiquitous cat. Aside from the aforementioned platypuses, this is an excellent collection of usable and attractive designs.

This is an ideal lampshade pattern book for anyone who wants to make a lampshade but feels intimidated by those prodigious 300-piece monsters (beautiful monsters though they may be). This book contains 18 patterns which, if used as is, would make lampshades 10" square; however, for some reason the author instructs us to enlarge the pattern 120%, 140% or 160% to make lamps 12", 14" or 16" square, respectively. Is 10" simply too small for a lampshade? We report, you decide.

Patterns include 8 flower designs (rose, tulip, iris, pansy, waterlily, magnolia, day lily, and poinsettia), 3 landscapes (southwest, mountains, lighthouse), a patriotic design (star and stripes), 2 bird scenes (chickadee/cardinal and hummingbirds), a sunrise, a Victorian design, an art nouveau design, and a dragonfly. Most of the lamp designs are a single panel repeated four times. The birds and the landscapes are made up of two pairs of complementary panels which, when viewed together, make a single scene. Some instructions are provided, including how to enlarge the pattern and what underpinnings to use. 24 pages. Cliffside Studio.

For the orchid afficionado, this well crafted book contains 17 designs for orchid projects, including windows, lampshades and jewelry boxes. Each design is anatomically correct, and is denoted by its scientific name in binomial nomenclature. The popular "Showy Lady's Slipper", or Cypripedium reginae, is represented twice, in a panel as well as a lampshade. The recommended glass selections of ripples and mottles create some breathtaking results. As with most books from Wardell Publications, some instructions, tips and tricks are included that will be useful for even the experienced craftperson.

by Early A. Consternation.

This book is a compilation of the illustrations from a collection of early lighting fixture manufacturers' catalogs issued between 1900 and 1925. Most stained glass hobbyists and professionals have no access to old stained glass lamp shade catalogs. Many photographs of fine stained glass lamp shades are shown in expensive books, but the books are not readily available to the general public.

The primary purpose of this book, as with any idea book, is to suggest basic themes or designs which can be adapted to, or modified into more appropriate schemes.

Each of the facing pages gives, in addition to dimensions, some other details, such as the number of individual pieces of glass. This information is included to give you an idea of the basic limitation of the design. A lampshade which was originally built as 24" in diameter may not adapt readily to, for instance, a 12" diameter shade because of the detail involved. Observing this note of caution, one can take almost any other liberty one desires as far as transferring sizes or shapes from one application to another.

64 Pages, 240 illustrations. 8-1/2" x 11".
